Society of Women Engineers recognizes Yale Engineer and Collegiate Section

Ju Hyun Lee, Ph.D. candidate in biomedical engineering, has been recognized by the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) with the Outstanding Graduate Student Member Award. Lee accepted the award last month at SWE's annual conference, WE25, in New Orleans.

The Outstanding Graduate Student Member Award recognizes Lee for her outstanding contribution to SWE, engineering societies, the community, and her campus.

“I am truly honored and humbled to receive this award," said Lee. "This recognition is more than a personal achievement—it embodies the support, encouragement, and inspiration I’ve been so fortunate to receive from my mentors and colleagues at Yale Engineering, as well as SWE members near and far. I’m deeply grateful to be part of such an empowering community."

Formerly president of Yale University’s collegiate section, Lee currently acts as the lead of the GradSWE Affinity Group, managing a board of dedicated graduate members across the U.S. and supporting the needs of all graduate members in SWE.

SWE also recognized the Yale University collegiate section with a Silver Mission Award for their achievements over the past year. This recognition celebrates SWE Groups that embody SWE core values and demonstrate continuous improvement and growth as they work to achieve the Society’s strategic goals. Last year’s success was driven by Ju Hyun Lee, Eléonore Lieffrig, Nicole Massoumi, and Halyn McKenzie, who led their respective student boards in planning and executing the section’s activities.

“This recognition is a wonderful reflection of the collaboration and energy within our collegiate section,” said Lee. “At Yale, undergraduate and graduate SWE members work hand in hand to support not only their own student communities but also the broader Yale and New Haven communities. I’m especially proud of our revival of Engineering Day, which was once a flagship, statewide outreach event. Looking ahead, we are focused on developing sustainable programs that will continue to grow our impact and engage the community for years to come.”

Lee's impact extends beyond organizational leadership to fostering a culture of mentorship and collaboration that has strengthened the Yale Engineering community. Her efforts have not gone unnoticed by Yale Engineering's leadership, who recognize the vital role student organizations play in shaping the school's inclusive environment.

The section received a Silver Mission Award for their achievements over the past year.

“Yale SWE is part of a community of graduate and undergraduate organizations that make Yale Engineering great,” said Vincent Wilczynski, Deputy Dean at Yale Engineering. “I’m delighted that the Society of Women Engineers recognized Yale’s Section as a model for other programs worldwide. I’m also delighted that Ju Hyun was celebrated as a SWE Graduate Student leader in recognition of her dedication and commitment to making opportunities available to all in Yale’s SWE Section. Yale SWE is on fire, and that’s a good thing!”

These awards recognize the student group’s continuing dedication to SWE’s mission – striving to highlight the impact and importance of women in engineering across the globe, leading by example, and demonstrating that a career in engineering can be a fulfilling, rewarding pursuit for women of any background.

“We’re thrilled to recognize this year’s SWE award recipients at WE25 in New Orleans, where the theme is ‘Embrace Your Story,’" said Inaas Darrat, FY26 SWE President. "These honorees exemplify the mission of SWE through their achievements, leadership, and service to the engineering and technology community across the globe. Each of their stories is a powerful reminder of the impact engineers can have in shaping our world and inspiring others.”
