Yale Engineering has a long history of envisioning and shaping the future. For more than 170 years, it has been a hub of discovery, advancing knowledge and transforming the field through bold ideas and interdisciplinary innovation. Established in 1852 with one of the first engineering professorships in the United States, Yale has been at the forefront of engineering education and research ever since. In 1863, Yale awarded the first American Ph.D. in engineering to Josiah Willard Gibbs, a New Haven native and a founding father of statistical thermodynamics. The university formally established its School of Engineering in 1919, later evolving into the School of Engineering & Applied Science in 2008—marking a shift toward a modern, integrated approach to engineering.
