People working in science lab

Yale’s Environmental Engineering faculty addresses global environmental challenges. by combining the University’s tradition of excellence with cutting-edge research and innovation. Here, you'll join a community of thinkers and doers, all working towards a sustainable future.

Environmental engineering encompasses the scientific assessment and development of engineering solutions to environmental problems. The field addresses broad environmental issues, including the safety of drinking water, groundwater protection and remediation, wastewater treatment, indoor and outdoor air pollution, climate change, solid and hazardous waste disposal, cleanup of contaminated sites, the prevention of pollution through product and process design, and strategies for sustainable water and energy use and production.

Environmental engineers must balance competing technical, social, and legal issues concerning the use of environmental resources. Our curriculum provides a comprehensive foundation in engineering disciplines but also provides opportunities to interact with the broader Yale community on policy, economics, public health, sustainable energy, and planetary sciences. Graduates are well-prepared for leadership roles in industry and government agencies, or for further studies in engineering, science, business, law, and medicine.

Undergraduate Degree Options

Two degree programs are offered to suit diverse career goals:

01

B.S. in Environmental Engineering

Designed for students who desire a strong background in environmental engineering leading to a career in the field.

02

B.A. in Engineering Sciences (Environmental)

Intended for students whose careers will involve, but not be dominated by, the skills of environmental engineering. The option is appropriate for those contemplating a career in which scientific and technological problems can play an important role, as is often the case in law, business, medicine, or public service.
