Hands-On Experience, Real-World Impact
At Yale Engineering, undergraduate research is a cornerstone of our educational approach. We believe hands-on research experience is crucial for developing innovative, well-rounded engineers. Our program supports both faculty-led and student-driven research initiatives, allowing students to apply classroom knowledge to real-world challenges.
Undergraduate students at Yale Engineering have numerous paths to pursue research. With a low student-to-faculty ratio, professors are responsive and eager to involve undergraduates in their cutting-edge research projects. Students often contribute to studies published in Nature, Scientific Advances, and other leading scientific publications.
We also encourage and support student-initiated research, fostering independence and creativity. Recent student-created companies include TranscribeGlass, the world's first affordable, wearable smart glass device for people with hearing loss and Spur, a code-free automation test platform powered by AI.

Undergraduate research projects often lead to remarkable outcomes. For example, one project focused on developing a smart strap for scoliosis braces, featuring Bluetooth connectivity to a smartphone app. This research evolved into a successful startup that was later acquired by a larger company. In another instance, a class project turned into an innovative telemedicine platform for skin abnormalities. With advice from their Yale mentors and a $400 prototype made with a 3D printing machine, the team raised millions in funding and was acquired by a major digital health company.
These projects showcase how our undergraduate research opportunities can lead to transformative innovations and successful entrepreneurial ventures. From medical devices to digital health solutions, our students are at the forefront of technological advancements that have real-world impact.
Students eager to dive into research can explore departmental research specialties and connect directly with faculty members working in their areas of interest.
