Vishnoi named IEEE Fellow

Nisheeth Vishnoi, the A. Bartlett Giamatti Professor of Computer Science, has been named a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) in the 2026 IEEE Fellows Class.

IEEE cited Vishnoi "for contributions to algorithms, optimization, and fairness in decision-making."

IEEE is the world's largest technical professional organization dedicated to advancing technology for the benefit of humanity. The grade of Fellow is the highest degree of IEEE membership and is conferred upon Senior Members with outstanding records of accomplishments in any of the IEEE fields of interest. Limited to less than 0.1% of voting members selected annually, this honor recognizes those whose accomplishments have contributed to the advancement or application of engineering, science, and technology, bringing significant value to society.

Vishnoi's research spans several areas of theoretical computer science, optimization, and machine learning. He is particularly interested in understanding and addressing key questions that arise in nature and society from a computational viewpoint, including the emergence of intelligence and the interface of artificial intelligence, ethics, and society. His recent work extends these ideas to understand and design computational frameworks that support responsible and effective human–AI interaction, with a particular interest in how AI systems shape human work, learning, and agency, and how they can be designed to complement human decision-making and serve broader societal needs.

Vishnoi earned a B. Tech. in computer science and engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay and a Ph.D. in algorithms, combinatorics, and optimization from the Georgia Institute of Technology. He worked in both industrial research labs and academia before joining Yale, most recently at Microsoft Research in India from 2009 to 2014, and then as an associate professor with tenure at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in Switzerland. He joined the Yale faculty as a full professor in the Department of Computer Science in 2019.

Vishnoi is the author of "Algorithms for Convex Optimization" (Cambridge University Press) and, at Yale, he is a co-founder of the Computation and Society Initiative, where researchers from across the university work to address the complications that arise as algorithm- and data-driven technologies permeate and alter various aspects of modern society. He serves as co-principal investigator in a $20 million NSF-funded AI Institute.

In addition to being named an IEEE Fellow, Vishnoi is also a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society and the Association for Computing Machinery.
