Planetary Solutions
At Yale Engineering, our researchers are reaching out across campus and beyond to develop cutting-edge research that addresses multiple environmental challenges. These include those related to air (both indoor and outdoor), water, and the energy we consume.
Our researchers are designing and deploying state-of-the-art instruments to gain unprecedented insight into what contaminants are in the air that we breathe. Further, we’re using that information to find the best ways to combat that pollution.

With special membranes and other technologies designed in our labs, we’re developing new and better ways to purify drinking water, especially in parts of the globe where it’s most needed. We’re pioneering the use of electricity to convert greenhouse gases into fuels and useful chemicals.
Pioneering the field of “green engineering,” our researchers are spearheading efforts to reduce the inherent waste and hazards in all stages of the lifecycle of a material, product, process, or system.
They’re designing new semiconductors and other materials to develop more energy-efficient devices. In Computer Science, they’re working to reduce the carbon emissions of data center networks.
Our roboticists have applied their expertise in designing and deploying devices in the wilderness to monitor the effects of climate change.
At Yale, we’ve teamed up with the School of Public Health, the School for the Environment and others. Beyond the university, we’ve partnered with industry and governments around the globe to find new and better ways to provide clean and safe environments for everyone.
